The Gallatin/Big Sky Noxious Weed Committee has continued to build a successful grassroots noxious weed program over the past five years along the Gallatin River Corridor, from the entrance of Yellowstone National Park to Four Corners, thanks to assistance from the Big Sky Resort Area District. This program is educating thousands of local citizens about noxious weed control every year as well as providing on-site assistance to a wide variety of landowners. The program also has established a comprehensive weed mapping program with agency partners and is able to facilitate treatment of key infestations throughout the area.

Overall, we evaluated the success of the program through partner agency participation (all agencies working on noxious weeds in the area are involved), number of landowners assisted (over 150 in 2008), miles weed mapped (well over 13 miles in 2008), and response received from our education/outreach program (we estimate we reached well over 1,500 people last year). In addition, volunteers contributed over 400 hours of assistance to our program during this grant cycle.

The Big Sky Resort Area District has been invaluable to the success of this program and has contributed directly to the education and outreach, landowner assistance and weed mapping efforts. Most importantly, we wouldn’t have been able to even launch this important program without BSRAD providing our original funding five years ago. Thank you!
